Elementary school students in Fuchu city learn about sports in Australia

On 11 October, Australian Embassy Public Affairs Counsellor Michael Hoy and Public Diplomacy Officer Ikuko Kohara shared information on Australia and Australian sports with students at Fuchu Daini Elementary School. The school is located in Tokyo’s Fuchu city, one of the official partners of the AUS+RALLY Sports Diplomacy Campaign.

Fuchu city is hosting a training camp for the Australian men’s national baseball team and is recognised as a host town for the Tokyo 2020 Olympics and Paralympics. The city invited the Embassy to conduct a lesson for 180 sixth grade students to drum enthusiasm ahead of a visit by the Australian baseball team in late October.

Students were quizzed on their knowledge of Australia and informed about Australian popular sports, famous athletes and Australia’s national sporting chant (Aussie, Aussie, Aussie).

The Australian Embassy in Tokyo is running the AUS+RALLY campaign in 2019-2020 to celebrate and support Japan’s hosting of the world’s greatest sporting events and their important legacy. Fuchu city has endorsed the initiative as a “Friend of Australia”.
