Kamaishi, Iwate | Rugby
Australian rugby player and former member of the Wallabies, Scott Fardy, has a special connection to Japan. He was based in Japan, playing professionally with the Kamaishi Seawaves in 2011 when the Great East Japan Earthquake and tsunami struck Kamaishi. In the aftermath of the tsunami, instead of returning to Australia, Fardy stayed in Kamaishi, volunteering with his teammates to deliver emergency relief supplies to people in the town. Since then he has been invited to the city on several occasions (Photo: 2018 Town Meeting welcoming Scott Fardy).
Kamaishi subsequently launched an international engagement program, sending high school students from the town to the Macedon Ranges in Victoria. The town has also continued to use sport to facilitate international friendship by inviting young Australian rugby players to visit Kamaishi.
